Southeast Tour Stop 1 ~ Georgia

By Kate

“Let’s bring our kids to all 50 states before they graduate high school,” said Travis back in 2014 as we journeyed along on our second major RV trip. Thanks to Family Heritage, the Vansumeren family, and our extended family, we’ve seen most of the country. The southeast is the last major tour we need to take before Taite (who is now a freshman in high school) graduates. (The kids have also never been to North Dakota, Montana, or Hawaii. We’ll keep working on those.)

Athens: First stop - a visit with the Rivas family in Athens, Georgia. We flew into Atlanta on Thursday, February 13, rented a car, and drove about an hour an a half to watch Eva Rivas play some basketball. We were surprised to see such a height difference between the first graders and the third graders. They played their hearts out, though!

Kristy made dinner reservations at Chops & Hops. After basketball we all enjoyed a fabulous meal and great conversation. This was Travis’ first time having shrimp & grits. Taite and Lincoln tried a bite as well. They thought it was delicious!

Sean and Kristy both attended the University of Georgia and Sean played football for the Dawgs, so we received an authentic campus tour. Frat row, north campus, Herty Field, Sanford Stadium, the chapel bell and more.

The Rivas’ are sweet, generous, hospitable, and they definitely know how to give a good tour. We actually learned a lot from them and were so blessed by our few hours together.

Tifton: Some of our favorite travel buddies and long-time friends live in Georgia. We drove south through the Georgia pines to spend the weekend with the Vansumeren's. We got to see what a day in the life was like for them. It’s baseball season. Need I say more?

Go Tift County! Tyler had games Saturday and Connor had games both Friday and Saturday nights. We layered up, grabbed blankets, and got cozy in the bleachers for a few hours (if that’s even possible). The games went late so our families ate dinner around 10:45pm both nights. That is actually the first time we Wilson’s have ever done that two days in a row. Fun to have these new experiences.

Many of the players were wearing, what I thought was, gold shoes. When I asked about this new fad, Stacey kindly informed me that they were not gold shoes. They were previously white cleats that had been stained by the red clay dirt of southern Georgia. 🤦🏼‍♀️ (I’ll plan to get my eyes checked when I get home.)
One of the things we love about the Vansumeren family is you don’t have to been doing anything scheduled or fancy to have a stupendous time with them. We spent the weekend watching baseball, playing yard games (especially backyard football), eating delicious food, playing card games, attending church service and Sunday school, talking, laughing, and lovin’ on Berkeley (their dog).

South Carolina was calling for us Monday morning. Tyler and our kids cooked a fabulous breakfast of waffles, bacon, eggs, and fruit.

We said our goodbyes and headed north. One last stop we made in Georgia was for lunch at the Sweet Tea Grill. I had my kids try some southern sweet tea. Two of them loved it. Two of them thought it was too sweet. We ended up having 1/2 sweet tea, 1/2 unsweetened tea. That was perfect. On to Charleston, South Carolina...
